ESET UNVEILS MOBILE SECURITY SOLUTION: ESET has released ESET Mobile Security, a solution built for smart phones and pocket-PCs running Windows Mobile and Symbian operating systems. The package features include anti-theft, SIM matching, password protection, security audit, SMS and MMS antispam, and firewall. ESET Mobile Security will be available in English version, with additional languages to follow in the coming months.
INJAZAT DATA SYSTEMS INKS DEAL WITH DOLPHIN ENERGY: UAE's Injazat Data Systems has signed a three-year contract to provide a managed print service to Dolphin Energy. Under the contract, Injazat will supply, install and commission imaging and printing devices as part of a service plan designed to develop a stable, reliable, scalable and agile infrastructure. The solution enables Dolphin to preserve print job confidentiality and support its commitment to minimize environmental impact through effective waste management programs that also enable increased savings in printing and copying costs.
TOSHIBA RECALLS LAPTOPS DUE TO FIRE HAZARD: The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has said that Toshiba has recalled 41,000 laptop computers worldwide because of a fire risk, AFP has reported. The computers involved are the Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite ProT130. The commission said that Toshiba has received 129 reports of the computers overheating and deforming the plastic casing area around the AC adapter plug. Toshiba offered a software program for download at laptops.toshiba.com/about/consumer-notices that detects whether the computer is overheating and disables its external power.
SAMSUNG LAUNCHES COMPETITOR TO IPAD: Samsung Electronics has unveiled the Galaxy Tab (GT-P1000), a new tablet PC powered by the Android Operating System 2.2, the Associated Press has reported. The device, which weighs 380 grams and has a 7-inch touch screen, supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G mobile phone networks. The new iPad rival also comes with two cameras, one 3-megabyte digital camera with a flash on the back of the device, and a second camera on the front for video conferences.
BELADCOM TO LAUNCH THE REGION'S FIRST VIRTUAL WORLD: Jordanian game developer Beladcom has signed a mutual cooperation agreement with Swedish software firm MindArk to create an online virtual world in Entropia Universe. The Entropia Universe is a highly advanced 3D online virtual universe with its own dynamic planetary systems. The universe currently has a user base of over 950,000 registered accounts from more than 200 countries.
XORIANT AGREES INFOR PARTNERSHIP: US-based business consulting and IT services provider, Xoriant Corp has been appointed as a Middle East channel partner for US-based enterprise software solutions provider, Infor. Xoriant has recently expanded its Middle East presence by opening an office in Dubai, which aims to provide more responsive sales, consulting and support service to clients. The firm said it is planning to set up operations in other GCC countries in the near future.
AMD SET TO RETIRE ATI NAME: AMD is to phase out the ATI graphics brand name in 2010, saying it was "unnecessary" to have two brands, ZDnet has reported. Existing products in the market will not see a name change, but new products will be branded AMD Radeon and AMD FirePro, the company said. The chipmaker plans to offer both CPUs and GPUs combined in its forthcoming Fusion product, the first of which, codenamed Ontario, will feature two low-power "Bobcat" CPUs combined with a Radeon GPU.
ASUS LAUNCHES NOTEBOOK FOR PRE-ADOLESCENTS: Asus has unveiled a netbook designed to make it easy for pre-adolescents to learn. The Eee PC 1001PQ is powered with Intel's Atom N450 and features a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display, Wi-Fi, and a built-in 0.3 megapixel camera. The 1001PQ runs on Microsoft Windows 7 and features the preteen-friendly Inspirus Desktop, which is an icon-based interface.
NEW ARABIC SSL ROLLED OUT: Khalid Fattal, chairman and CEO of the Multilingual Internet Names Consortium, has said his company has produced the very first Arabic Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to help localise internet protection in Arab countries where new high-level domain names in non-Latin script are being introduced, Gulf News has reported. The new Arabic SSL protocol will help guarantee privacy and confidentiality for e-commerce websites as well as simple websites looking to certify to their electronic visitors that the websites are, indeed, who they say they are, he said.
LENOVO PLANS TO RELEASE GAME CONSOLE: Chinese manufacturer of desktop and notebook PCs Lenovo has announced it has developed a new gaming console with Microsoft Kinect-like functionality called the eBox, as it seeks to secure a foothold in this lucrative field currently dominated by Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, Cnet has reported. Full details on the eBox haven't been divulged, but Lenovo did confirm that the console will arrive in China first. It hopes to bring the device to store shelves by the end of 2010.
INTEL WARY OF REVENUE SHORTFALL: Intel has warned that third-quarter revenue could fall short of its own estimates by more than $1bn, reinforcing doubts about the strength of a technology sector recovery, Reuters has reported. Analysts have said companies with exposure to the struggling PC industry, fighting flagging demand from slowing growth in Europe, China and the US and rising inventory, may warn of revenue shortfalls in coming weeks. "That trend will continue in Q1 until we fix the inventory issues in the second," analyst Tristan Gerra at Baird and Co said.
COMPUTER SERVER SALES INCREASE: An IDC report has revealed that recovery in global demand has boosted second-quarter sales for computer servers by 11 percent to $10.9bn. The numbers represent the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales growth and the fastest quarterly growth in the server market since 2003. Server shipments also rose 23.8 percent from 2009's second quarter, a slight increase from the 23 percent gain seen in the first quarter but the fastest quarterly growth in more than five years.
DU AND INJAZAT TO PROVIDE NETWORKED IT SERVICES: UAE's Injazat Data Systems and Du have announced a partnership agreement to provide business customers with state-of-the-art networked IT services. In March last year, the two firms signed a three year deal under which Injazat provides managed collocation services for Du's systems through its Abu Dhabi-based Tier IV data centre.
MICROSOFT WARNS USERS OF SECURITY RISK TO APPLICATIONS: Microsoft has issued a warning about a security issue that could leave many Windows applications vulnerable to attack, Cnet has reported. The advisory deals with a type of attack mechanism known as DLL preloading, or binary planting. Microsoft said it has also issued guidance to developers on how to avoid the vulnerability and that it is checking its own code to see if any Microsoft products are at risk.
VIEWSONIC MIDDLE EAST TO OFFER SOLELY LED TECHNOLOGY FOR PC DISPLAY PRODUCTS : ViewSonic Middle East has announced that all of the company's PC display products will feature LED technology by early 2011. LED display products allow for lower energy costs while delivering better picture quality. Meanwhile, the company said it remains committed to commercial partners who have standardised on specific CCFL displays, and will continue to produce those until demand subsides.
FACEBOOK USERS WARNED OF HACKER THREAT: Global provider of anti-malware security solutions, BitDefender has issued a malware alert to all Facebook users about a new cyber attack tool called 'facebook Hacker' which enables cybercriminals to steal usernames and passwords from various user accounts. The threat has been identified as Trojan.Generic.3576478. In order to stay safe, the firm has advised users to ensure that they are running a frequently updated antivirus utility and to never run files that are received as attachments or via IM, or at least, scan them before running.
SANDISK INTRODUCES SMALLER SOLID STATE DRIVE: SanDisk Corp has a solid state drive (SSD) which is smaller than a postage stamp and offers higher capacities and performance than existing storage solutions. Measuring 16mm x 20mm x 1.85mm and weighing less than one gram, the SanDisk integrated SSD (iSSD) is the first flash SSD device to support the industry standard SATA interface in a small BGA (Ball Grid Array) package that can be soldered onto any motherboard.
GOOGLE PAYS HACKERS FOR CHROME VULNERABILITIES: Google has released its internet browser Chrome 5.0.375.127 with patches for 9 security holes and a workaround for a Windows kernel bug, ZDNet has reported. The online firm has paid $10,011 in rewards to the hackers who reported the issues. The update is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
INTEL TO ACQUIRE MCAFEE IN $7.68BN DEAL: Intel has agreed to acquire security software maker McAfee for $7.68bn, CNN has reported. The deal has been approved by boards of directors at both companies, and must be approved by McAfee shareholders and government regulators for it to become final. "The deal positions Intel well for the future of computing across a broad range of devices and usages," Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said.
IBM LAUNCHES POWER 7 SYSTEMS: IBM has launched new Power7 systems designed to manage demanding workloads and emerging applications, including a high-end system that offers better energy efficiency. The new Power7 technology supports four times as many processor cores as prior systems and uses the latest PowerVM virtualisation software to allow customers to run over 1,000 virtual servers on a single physical system,
