Entanet and Thinkbroadband.com argue unlimited broadband is unsustainable
(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Leading wholesale voice and data connectivity provider, Entanet, and independent broadband analysis and comparison site, Thinkbroadband.com, are calling for more users to be made aware of the unsustainable nature of so-called unlimited broadband services in the UK.
In a guest blog on Entanets opinion website, the co-founder of Thinkbroadband.com, Sebastien Lahtinen, explains why he believes that the idea of providing theoretically unlimited services is no longer viable in the UK broadband market, due to factors such as bandwidth costs, traffic management, capacity and congestion.
Lahtinen says: If we want our users to have 1Gbps connections, we have to accept that unlimited broadband cannot exist without some other way of controlling usage. Its easy to deliver an unlimited 1Mbps service as the user is restricted by the size of the pipe (bandwidth), but delivering a 1Gbps connection, one thousand times faster than 1Mbps (and not at 1000 times the cost) means restricting usage by one or more of the above levers.
Entanet agrees with Lahtinen and welcomes the proposed review of unlimited marketing by the ASA (Advertising Standard Authority). In the article, the company states: We dont believe that truly unlimited packages will be sustainable in the UK broadband market in the medium term and its time for consumers to be made fully aware of that fact. If theyre not, they risk being seduced by unlimited advertising only to be stung at a later date by FUPs and hidden traffic shaping policies.
