ENTANET: Is it the beginning of the end for the Great Aussie Firewall?
Jun 30, 2010 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
In the latest posting on Entanets opinion website, General Manager of the leading wholesale communications provider, Elsa Chen, welcomes the news that the so-called Great Aussie Firewall campaign, looks to be running out of steam.
For some time now, Australias Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, has been attempting to drive through net filtering legislation that would force Australian ISPs to censor web content. The proposed measures would however, not only go too far, but also lead to a fall in performance and potential increase in costs for users, and have little effect in preventing determined users from circumnavigating any filters that are put in place.
With opposition mounting and the proposal being lambasted as politically toxic in Australia, it now looks unlikely that the Bill will be brought forward before the expected General Election in October. While recognising the best intentions of the plans, Chen believes this is the best outcome.
Whilst we applaud Mr Conroys initial passion for attempting to stamp out the hideous wrongs of the Internet such as child pornography, we too have concerns over the final scope of the proposed filter and its actual effectiveness. The more determined and tech savvy offenders will be able to circumnavigate filters.
She also points out that the filter that is being proposed is much broader-reaching in its scope and that this would set a dangerous precedent as it would make it easier for governments to expand the scope of their censorship policies, pointing to the controversy in China as an example of what could happen.
