Taoglas Launches End-to-End Antenna Solutions for Mesh Networks

Taoglas (News - Alert) Offers a Complete Mesh Network Antenna Solution that can be Tailored to Customer Needs Hanover, Cebit, - March 2, 2010 - Taoglas, the leading M2M antenna provider, (www.taoglas.com), today launched a full range of antennas required for companies who need to build a full mesh network. All mesh networks require three types of antennas: base station antennas, remote external antennas and remote internal antennas. Taoglas is the first company to provide a solution for all three antennas in multiple frequencies including cellular, Zigbee and ISM. All antennas can be customized or used off-the-shelf. These antennas will be showcased at the Taoglas booth C28, Hall 7 (Telematics) in the M2M Zone (News - Alert) at Cebit in Hanover.

Barracuda Base Station Antennas The Barracuda range of base station antennas, are an omni directional antenna that connect directly to mesh access points and telemetry units. They are available at 433Mhz, 868Mhz, 915Mhz, 2400Mhz and 5200MHz for operation in the main licence-free bands used for M2M applications. Omni directional antennas give the best value because they give a maximum coverage range in the horizontal (azimuth) plane, covering 360 degrees thus minimizing the amount of nodes needed for a mesh network. These antennas display a high quality in design and finish with aluminium mounts and high power handling internal copper elements offering high performance and robustness. The Barracuda range is entirely customisable, and can be made in different frequencies, colours and shapes in order to match the access point box. Design options include a connector integrated into the base of the antenna so the antenna can be screwed directly to the access point, eliminating cable requirements and helping with waterproofing and secure connection for long term use.

The advanced antenna electrical design mitigates the use of materials that result in performance loss, delivering high efficiencies across the spectrum. Different gain versions of this antenna are also available at each frequency. Taoglas panel, sector-panel and yagi antennas provide coverage for dead spots and back-haul point-to-point.

Hercules Remote External Antennas External remote antennas are still required where no signal is present at an installation point that is underground or close to metal, or where manufacturers need to run a cable to an area of signal so a unit can connect to the mesh. The Hercules range of external antennas has been upgraded to meet the demands of these harsh mesh network requirements for remote monitoring, metering and M2M markets. Available in GPS, cellular, WiFi (News - Alert) and Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands 433Mhz, 868Mhz, or 915Mhz versions, this range of antennas includes a thick thread and nut for a secure mounting solution. Taoglas also has the ability to customise cables and connectors including low-loss special cables with armoured options.

Taoglas added the following features to the Hercules range of antennas based on evolving market requirements: - New dual-use nut in order to accommodate larger connectors such as TNC, N Female and Fakra.

- Contoured grip enables easy manual tightening of antenna to mounting surface without need of tools.

- A "Made in Japan" durable waterproof synthetic rubber base, for under the top of the housing with double-sided adhesive for protection of water ingress through the hole drilled in the roof.

- Low-loss cable options (RG58, LMR200, CFD200).

- Armoured cabling options for heavy machinery environments.

- Overmolded connector options for superior strain relief.

- Specifications upgraded to show real life performance for different ground-planes and cable lengths.

Unlike the fragile plastic base solutions of standard market screw mount antennas, the base and thread of the Hercules antenna are made of one piece of C&C'd nickel-plated steel. The housing is low profile and aerodynamically shaped so it will not catch on stray branches or overhanging wires. It is waterproof and easy to install, saving on installation time. Included in the Hercules range of antennas are: MA.104 for GPS, cellular MA.501for GPS, WiFi A.01for GPS 2 stage for location based services A.03 for GPS 3 stage for long cable runs G.21 for cellular WS.01 for WiFi Range of Remote Internal Antennas The loop, PCB and freedom range of off-the-shelf flexible circuit antennas are available for cellular bands GSM, CDMA, 3G, ISM and other licence free bands; 433MHz, 784Mhz, 868MHz, 915MHz, 2.4GHz, 5GHz This unique series of internal M2M antennas is designed to give the largest omni-directional range of antennas for telemetry and remote monitoring. It has the following advantages: - A high average gain, efficiency means less expensive nodes or amplifiers are needed in a network.

- The antennas come with a cable and connector and in some cases do not need customization, saving months of development work.

- The antennas can be stuck directly to the plastic housing of the device, leaving space on the board for other components.

- This range is mechanically robust, able to withstand extreme temperature and humidity and have proven long lifetimes.

- Unlike current market offerings that can take months to produce, Taoglas offers a customized antenna at any frequency for a device that can be produced in three to four weeks or, an off-the-shelf solution for immediate use.

The embedded series of antennas include: FXP.07, FXP.14, FLA.01 for cellular FXP.70, FXP.72, FXP.73, WLA.01, PC11, SWLP.12 for Wi-Fi - 2.4GHz FXP.240, FXP.245, FXP.270, FXP.280, and FXP.290, ILA.01, ILA.02, and PC31,PC81,PC91 for 433MHz, 450Mhz, 784Mhz, 868Mhz, 915MHz and ISM bands.

"For companies looking to build robust, high performance mesh network solutions, Taoglas offers flexibility of design, easy customization, and antennas that are relevant and durable all from one company," said Dermot O’Shea, Director, Taoglas. "For mesh networks where high speed connection to mobile devices with large data requirements is needed, device antenna efficiency must be very high. If this is not in place then expensive base stations, amplifiers and external antennas are required to compensate. We complete the picture with efficient small ISM/Wi-Fi antennas for these mobile devices so it turns out these little guys are important."
