Mobile Operators Willing to Collaborate Across Networks to Foster Innovation According to Recent Research

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)-- Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in carrier-grade messaging security, today announced it will be presenting the results of the GSMA (News - Alert) Anti-Abuse Research Initiative survey at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As a partner and member of the GSMA, Cloudmark will discuss the GSMA-conducted research, which focuses on defining the anti-abuse interests of mobile network operators (MNOs) and addresses some of the most pressing security challenges they are facing today.

The survey-based research was conducted by a leading market research firm to investigate issues related to mobile anti-abuse in 2009. The project was named the Anti-Abuse Research Initiative. 35 individual interviews were completed globally representing a broad base of GSMA member operators.

Key findings include: Spam is the primary abuse concern for MNOs, with 93 percent of those surveyed experiencing mobile attacks in the past 12 months; most reported that this is an issue they deal with daily.

93 percent of MNOs expect mobile messaging abuse will increase via spam, phishing / smishing, viruses, spoofing, faking and flooding.

89 percent of MNOs are willing to work in collaboration for an industry-wide solution.

Operators see the GSMA as having a role in addressing mobile abuse.

The initiative revealed that mobile abuse is a current and growing global issue and a collaborative effort is needed and supported by those member operators interviewed. As part of the initiative, the GSMA is investigating solutions focused on protecting consumers, mobile operators, and legitimate mobile marketers.

Hugh McCartney, chief executive officer of Cloudmark (News - Alert), said: "The global community of mobile end users and network operators that the GSMA represents is a top priority for us as a company. By approaching security issues as collective challenges for the community, we envision solutions in this area that will drive lasting, global progress." The presentation entitled, Global Perspective: Mobile Spam Reporting and Collective Action, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the GSMA Theatre, 7SEM, App Planet-Hall 7 at Mobile World Congress (News - Alert). The session is open to all participants at Mobile World Congress.

As part of the presentation, GSMA and Cloudmark, along with leading select global MNOs will discuss the results of the Anti-Abuse Research Initiative with special focus on understanding the anti-abuse interests of operators and specific approaches to realizing a collective solution. The session will be moderated by the GSMA and will address a global, cooperative effort to protect mobile consumers and operators against mobile spam.
