Heavyweight Lonnie Zaid comes away with unanimous decision
Jan 16, 2010 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Former national Golden Gloves champion Lonnie Zaid (3-0) of Detroit scored a unanimous decision over Tim Back (2-1) of Cincinnati in their heavyweight bout at DeCarlo's Convention Center in Warren on Friday night.
Using a sharp left jab and a bruising right, Zaid controlled the fight from the opening bell, rocking Back over the closing seconds of their four-round match.
Zaid, 31, is expected to fight in the Detroit area at least three or four more times this year.
Rahim Muhammad of Detroit (2-0) made short work of Robert Mendoza (0-1) of Frankfort, Ind., who was making his pro debut, in a one-sided heavyweight encounter. Muhammad ripped Mendoza with savage body shots, and referee Frank Garza halted the fight at 1:50 of the first round with Mendoza caught in his corner.
Making his pro debut, Michael Moore (1-0) of Cleveland scored a punishing first-round TKO over Detroit's Demetrius Robinson (2-3) in a middleweight contest.
Moore put Robinson down twice before dispatching him to the canvas with right and lefts at 2:02 of the round. The referee stopped the fight and Robinson was helped to a stool, where he quickly recovered.
Between bouts, donations were taken for victims of the Haiti earthquake. Red Cross staff collecting $6,500 from around the ring before fight promoter John Carlisle of Grosse Pointe added another $1,500 for a total of $8,000.
In opening-night action, Edward Perry (16-4-2) of Cairo, Ga., jabbed his way to an easy points win over James Morrow (11-16-3) of Lafayette, Ind., in their cruiserweight clash.
Purnell Gates (17-1) of Grand Rapids proved too big and too strong for Jaime Castellano (4-24) of Lansing, who gave away at least 6 inches in height in their junior middleweight scrap. Gates won by unanimous decision.
Detroit's Larry Carter (4-4-2) and Nathan Wilkes (2-17-1) of Anderson, Ind., fought to a draw in their cruiserweight bout when the fight was stopped after Wilkes suffered a deep gash over his right eye following an accidental head butt.
