AirTran giveaway a likely hit
Dec 27, 2009 (The Pantagraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Here's one flight where overcrowding probably wouldn't lead to a lot of complaints.
AirTran Airways is giving away a trip for two aboard a flight to Las Vegas with the models from the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. Enjoy two nights in the city of lights and receive tickets to the best SI parties on the Strip. For official rules and to register to win, visit www.airtran.com/SI until Jan. 15.
In separate news, AirTran recently launched nonstop flights to Nassau, Bahamas, from Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington and Orlando and new flights to Key West, Fla.
The moves were made after the carrier introduced flights to San Juan and Cancun earlier this year. "Our service to Nassau comes just in time for travelers to escape the cold weather and warm up during the winter holidays and the New Year," said Matthew Klein, Air Tran's director of pricing and distribution planning
Whale of a deal
Shedd Aquarium's beluga whale Puiji gave birth to a calf on Dec. 14. The male calf seems healthy though it came into the world upside down -- head first, instead of tail first.
"We are thrilled to welcome the newest member of the Shedd beluga family; however, a newborn calf must reach several milestones in its first days and months so we remain cautiously optimistic," said Ken Ramirez, senior vice president of animal collections and training.
Officials at the aquarium said the rare breach birth left the calf's tail slightly curved, and they are watching closely to make certain it can dive correctly. Mother and calf are currently off exhibit.
Exercise in mid-air
In response to a survey by TripAdvisor.com showing one-third of travelers exercise less, health and fitness expert Dr. Eric Plasker, author of The 100 Year Lifestyle Workout, offered a 10-minute stretching routine to exercise your core on a plane.
For the tricep extension, put your hands on the armrests and raise your bottom off of your seat by putting the weight on your triceps. Lower yourself back down, repeat.
For cross-over resistance, sit with your back straight, knees bent and feet on the floor. Place the palm of your right hand on the inside of your left knee. Apply pressure with your right hand on this knee while raising your left knee toward your right shoulder. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat with the left hand and right knee.
And, double leg extensions can be done by sitting upright in your seat with back straight, knees bent and feet on the floor, then raise both legs straight out in front of you at the same time and hold for 10 seconds. Do three sets of 10 repetitions for each exercise.
Just grand
The Grand Canyon is one of Arizona's top attractions, but officials at Explore Arizona Tours hope visitors don't overlook other grand destinations the state offers.
Suggestions include: Sedona, Ariz., for hiking, camping and Jeep trips; Phoenix for hiking day trips, desert tours, rock climbing and rafting/ kayaking trips on the Salt River; and Page, Ariz., for river rafting or rowing.
