Man accused of raping teen: Suspect allegedly forged relationship with victim via social networking site
TREMONTON, Dec 19, 2009 (Standard-Examiner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A 27-year-old man was arrested last week after police say he raped a 17-year-old girl he met through a social networking site. Nicholas Aragon was booked into Box Elder County Jail on suspicion of rape.
Tremonton Police Chief Dave Nance said the 17-year-old called police on Dec. 11 and said she had been raped.
"The officers were told she had formed a relationship with a person through a social networking site a few months ago," he said. "After talking on this site for a while, it got to where they were speaking over the phone and texting."
The two made plans to meet Dec. 11. Aragon, who Nance said was from the West Valley City area, traveled to Tremonton to visit the girl.
The girl took Aragon to meet her mother, but she wasn't home when they arrived.
"While they were there, things progressed to where he assaulted her," Nance said.
After the incident, Aragon left the area. The girl could give only minimal information about the man she met and didn't know his last name.
Nance said officers were able to develop information that led them to Aragon. He was arrested in West Valley City and taken to Box Elder County.
Nance said those who use social networking sites must be very careful when making connections with strangers.
"They talk to them on the phone, they feel comfortable like they know them even though they do not," he said.
"They don't know a lot about them in detail, and when they arrange to meet in person, they could be taken advantage of. Just be careful."
Nance encourages parents to be aware of what their children are doing online, because predators are often using the Internet and social networking Web sites to lure children.
