Seabees will get some TV air time
GULFPORT, Dec 06, 2009 (The Sun Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The Gulfport Seabees are expecting more than just 15 minutes of fame as they appear in at least three filmed segments to feature the Naval Construction Battalion Center that will air in 2010.
Filming wrapped earlier this month for a one-hour documentary by Screaming Flea Productions of Seattle.
Director Chuck O'Farrell and videographer Nick Junke traipsed through the forest and fields of Camp Shelby, following the NMCB 7's field exercises for five days.
"These guys are like builders on steroids," O'Farrell said. "No messing around here; they build under very extreme conditions."
NMCB 7 returned from Iraq and Afghanistan in February and will deploy to Rota, Spain, in February, said public affairs officer Rob Mims.
O'Farrell captured the construction of a double-deck bridge, a heavy-timber bunker and a crow's nest. They witnessed gas attacks and camp assaults on the Seabees.
He said the teamwork he witnessed is impressive, especially while under simulated attack.
"The field exercise looks great on camera and illustrates some of what it takes to be prepared for deployment around the world," he said.
The crew also visited the training center in Gulfport for tours of classrooms and project areas to see how members of the Navy, Army and Air Force learn their trades there.
The trip was completed with a visit to the 20th Seabee Readiness Group's Combat Convoy, where floor-to-ceiling, 360-degree video monitors and surround sound speakers teach Seabees how to operate vehicles effectively and safely in a combat convoy situation.
The Screaming Flea production should air on one of Discovery Communications' channels by mid-2010.
Leopard Films, contracted by the DIY Network, filmed a one-hour feature hosted by Josh Temple that will air in early January.
National Geographic filmed a battalion making improvements to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan, which will air early next year.
