Illinois urging Mike Tisdale to be more aggressive

LAS VEGAS, Nov 27, 2009 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune News Service via COMTEX) -- While freshmen Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson provided many of Illinois' highlights the past few weeks, junior forward Mike Tisdale didn't do much to attract attention as he blended into the action.

But he caught Bruce Weber's eye.

"He was almost like a spectator," the Illini coach said. "Instead of getting involved, screening, stepping, he just kind of went in the short corner and just stood there. He watched instead of getting involved in the game." That prompted a stern lecture from Weber in practice before the Illini's game against Wofford and Tisdale got the message loud and clear. He had his best game of the young season, shooting 6 of 8 for 12 points to go with five rebounds. Weber expected more of the same Friday night against Utah in the Las Vegas Invitational.

"He's smart and he's one of our best team guys, there's no doubt," Weber said. "But the thing I yelled at him the other day about, I said it's great that you're a team guy but I need you to compete and be more assertive." Weber's words of motivation for Tisdale go beyond production on the court.

"He said to be more solid, more of a leader, don't go through the motions," Tisdale said of Weber's practice speech.

Because he's an upperclassman, Tisdale has been encouraged by Weber to provide leadership, and that means adjusting his attitude when action on the court doesn't always go his way. In the past, Weber said, Tisdale would get down on himself if he would commit a foul and that frustration would cause him to miss shots on the offensive end.

"Then you have to sit with me (on the bench) and that doesn't make any sense," Weber said. "When it's not going great, you still can do little things _ you can rebound, you can be enthusiastic." Like fellow junior forward Mike Davis, Tisdale benefited last season from having former teammate Chester Frazier drive and distribute the ball once he got in the lane.

Now, with Richardson and Paul looking to score when they drive to the basket, Tisdale has to create his own shots.

"He has a great touch and he has the hook down," Weber said.

"He has to be able to get a foot in the lane to shoot it. And then he's one of our best from 15 feet. Then you spread the defenses." But even if those shots don't fall, Tisdale can't get down on himself, or fade into the background.

"When (Weber) has been talking lately, he has said, 'You have to lose yourself to the team. Don't worry about how many points you score. Whatever you do, worry about the team and everything will be all right,'" Tisdale said.
