BRIEF: Kids steer Lego robots in Horry County
Jan 28, 2009 (The Sun News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Building blocks interact with bits and bytes this week as 23 middle-school students at St. Michael Catholic School prepare to compete in Saturday's Lego robotics competition at Trident College in Charleston.
"They really had to learn to work together to be able to do all of this," said Kyle Myers, head of the Science Department at St. Michael Catholic School. "The meet should sort of be like a monster truck rally, an athletic event and racing robots all in one."
In the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League challenge, students design Lego robots controlled by computers that are scored on the time it takes them to perform specific tasks.
The competition's theme this year is "Climate Connections."
