TMCNet: Homeshoring creates unique jobs for stay at home workforce.

[February 11, 2008]

Homeshoring creates unique jobs for stay at home workforce.

Employers outsourcing everything from drive-thru orders to ESL lessons.

The next time you're ordering a burger and fries at your local drive-thru, the person you speak to may be a stay at home mom -- in North Dakota. Native English speakers in Wyoming work overnight shifts catering to the needs of ESL students in China. Cruise.com and JetBlue Airways have a home-based workforce that handles everything from reservations to flight arrivals – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – no matter the weather.

Homesourcing, the art of outsourcing call center work to home-based US workers, has truly hit home. “There are literally thousands of opportunities that are available right now for home-based workers,” says Melissa Brewer, author of The Little White Ebook of Homeshoring Jobs, a digital publication that profiles 198 virtual call center employers down to salaries, schedules, and hiring practices. “Some of the tasks they're outsourcing are truly innovative and surprising.“ With a heightened sensitivity to customer relationships and the benefit of technological advances, homeshoring has become an integral part of many business's outsourcing plans.

People seeking the flexibility of a work from home job are also reaping the rewards. The jobs typically pay from $8 to $30 an hour, often with benefits and a tax write-off for equipment expenses.

Currently, there are roughly 112,000 home-based phone representatives in the United States, according to the research group International Data Corporation (IDC). That number is expected to triple by 2010. BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) firms LiveOps (News - Alert) of California and Alpine Access of Colorado employ thousands of work-from-home representatives across the US for clientèle ranging from online retailers to insurance companies and plan to hire more this year.

“The best part of the homeshoring revolution is the fact that it's empowering a whole new workforce with real telecommuting choices. These employers are hiring stay at home moms and dads, students, and people with disabilities,” says Ms. Brewer, “2008 is going to be a great year for the home-based worker. With several of the companies (we've profiled) already hiring, there are a lot of fun, legitimate opportunities for people that want to work from home.”

The Little White Ebook of Homeshoring Jobs, recently updated, is a 243 page guide to virtual call center employment. It is updated on a monthly basis for all readers and includes complete profiles on 198 virtual call center employers in North America.
