Hertzog leads trio of college signees: Antietam's Corey Hertzog, Wilson's Scott Krotee and Holy Name's Adam Miller will sign with Division I soccer...

(Reading Eagle (PA) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Feb. 5--Led by two-time Berks scoring champion Corey Hertzog of Antietam, a trio of Berks boys soccer players will sign letters of intent this week to play at Division I college programs.

Hertzog, whose 47-goal 2007 season represented the eighthhighest single-season total in county history, has long since settled on longtime head coach Barry Gorman's program at Penn State.

Wilson goalkeeper Scott Krotee, a 2006 All-Berks selection who followed that with a 14-shutout senior year in '07, will sign with Gardner-Webb (N.C.).

And Holy Name keeper Adam Miller, the sturdy backstop for a program that went from a nobody to a Class A somebody in the span of his four seasons, recently committed verbally to Canisius. The players will sign either Wednesday, the national signing day, or Thursday. Hertzog, a 100-plus goal scorer during his eventful Antietam career, is the group's clear headliner.

He chose Penn State over several offers; the other two finalists were Delaware and Air Force.

Hertzog will receive a 40 percent soccer scholarship with the Nittany Lions, a historically handsome sum for Gorman to give a freshman.

"When I went there two years ago for a soccer camp, I just fell in love with the campus and everything about Penn State," said Hertzog, who plans to major in secondary education or kinesiology. "And ever since, I've always wanted to go there."

Hertzog was a contributing freshman on Antietam's 2004 team, which brought home the school's second District 3-A title and only PIAA title.

Two years later he amassed a county-high 38 points during an all-division fall, then capped his career with the most prolific season in Berks in eight years.

He had a remarkable 14 of Antietam's 16 postseason goals, leading the Mounts to the 3-A final and PIAA-A semifinals. They fell in each instance to Camp Hill.

This winter Hertzog again attended the United Soccer Leagues Super-Y ODP camp through the Reading Rage and again made the 18-player national select team for his age group (17-18).

Krotee posted 26 shutouts during his two years as Wilson's starter.

An All-Division I keeper as a senior, he had a skinny 0.76 goals-against average in 2007 and was a force behind the Bulldogs' Berks I title and trips to the Berks final and District 3-AAA quarterfinals.

He chose Gardner-Webb, which will move from the Atlantic Sun Conference to the Big South Conference in the fall, over Division I Sacred Heart (Conn.) and High Point (N.C.), and Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) and North Carolina Wesleyan.

"When I got there it just felt like a better fit than the rest of the places that I visited," said Krotee, who plans to major in athletic training or exercise science. "It just felt right being there."

Krotee said he'll have an opportunity to compete for a starting spot during his freshman fall.

Ditto for Miller, a two-time All-Division IV keeper whose skills and leadership helped Holy Name turn its program around.

Miller was the keeper as the Blue Jays, under coach and father Steve Miller, set program records for wins (16) and advanced to the District 3-A and PIAA-A semifinals in 2006.

He capped his career with seven shutouts as a senior, leading Holy Name back to the 3-A semis and into the PIAA quarters.

Miller settled on a full Canisius scholarship relatively late in his selection process and after seriously considering Lipscomb (Tenn.). Wofford (S.C.) and Loyola, Md., were also in the mix.

Canisius plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference against such schools as Loyola and Rider, which will give his parents a chance to watch him play.

"The keeper situation is very good for me," Miller said. "They see me coming in and being able to battle for a starting spot as a freshman. They're not guaranteeing anything, but they're bringing me in with the hope of me being the starter."
