(AP Online Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Leadoff Primary Shapes White House RaceMANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) _ John McCain jokingly predicted a landslide while hoping for a mere victory and Hillary Rodham Clinton promised to spare no effort getting her supporters out as New Hampshire primary voters put their stamp Tuesday on a race imperiling presidential ambitions in both parties. Weather was spring-like and participation apparently brisk, although it remained to be seen whether New Hampshire would match the record-busting turnout of the Iowa caucuses only five days earlier. Republicans, their national race for the nomination tangled, watched a New Hampshire contest unfold between McCain and Mitt Romney at the top of the field, while Democrat Barack Obama bid for a second win against rivals Clinton and John Edwards.

US, Iraq Launch Anti-Extremist OperationBAGHDAD (AP) _ U.S. and Iraqi forces launched a major operation to strike against al-Qaida in Iraq and other extremists, the U.S. military said Tuesday, hoping to build on a recent reduction of violence and push militants from their strongholds. The division and brigade-level operation, dubbed Phantom Phoenix, will cover the entire country, the military said.

British Detectives Meet With MusharrafISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) _ President Pervez Musharraf told British forensic experts Tuesday they would have a free hand in investigating the circumstances surrounding the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, a government official said. The promise appeared to be a softening of the government's position on the probe. Last week, Musharraf told reporters the investigators would not be allowed to go on a "wild goose chase" and investigate claims the government was behind Bhutto's killing in a Dec. 27 shooting and bombing attack.

Boy Scout Saves Leader of the MaldivesCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ The president of the Maldives was saved from assassination Tuesday when a boy scout grabbed the knife of an attacker who had jumped out of a crowd greeting the leader, an official said. President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was not hurt, but his shirt was ripped when the attacker tried to stab him before the boy and security guards intervened during the event on the small island of Horafushi, said government spokesman Mohammad Shareef.

Feds May Expand Mortgage Help ProgramWASHINGTON (AP) _ Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said Tuesday the administration was exploring what would be a significant expansion of the program to help at-risk mortgage holders. Paulson, in an interview on CNBC, said the administration was involved in discussions with the mortgage industry to expand a current program to freeze adjustable rate mortgages for five years to include borrowers of loans at prime rates. Currently, the rate freeze only covers a much smaller segment of adjustable rate loans, those made to subprime borrowers. Those are borrowers with weak credit histories.

HDTV Makers Struggle to Stand OutLAS VEGAS (AP) _ HDTV manufacturers are trying to make the task of buying an HDTV set much more difficult than just choosing between LCD and plasma, 42 inches or 46 inches. To stand out amid fierce competition, they're adding exotic features, and even a little bit of color to the plain black bezels that have been de rigeur. They're also chasing each other to zero _ zero thickness, that is. Apparently, you can't be too thin if you're a TV.

Healthy Habits Can Mean 14 Extra YearsLONDON (AP) _ To get an extra 14 years of life, don't smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in moderation. That is according to a study published Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine journal.

Joe Gibbs Resigns As Redskins CoachWASHINGTON (AP) _ After the toughest season of his Hall of Fame career, one that tested his leadership like never before, Joe Gibbs is stepping down. He resigned as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, three days after a playoff loss ended an inspirational late-season run that followed the death of safety Sean Taylor.
