University of Massachusetts Amherst, Cedar Point Communications Enter Into Five-Year Agreement for Deployment of Safari C(Cubed) in Campus-Wide Architecture

DERRY, N.H. and AMHERST, Mass., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Cedar Point Communications, Inc., the worldwide leader in VoIP switching technologies for service provider and enterprise telecommunications, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst today announced that they have entered into a five-year research and deployment agreement to provide advanced VoIP applications on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus.

The agreement, the first full deployment for Cedar Point within a campus environment, calls for the deployment of the Cedar Point SAFARI C(Cubed) Multimedia Switching System for the delivery of IP-based telephony services to up to 30,000 faculty, student and administrative staff users over the existing UMass network infrastructure. In addition, the university and Cedar Point will work together to develop new, advanced features and applications for voice and multimedia services.

The agreement follows the successful trial of SAFARI C(Cubed) in 2006 as a replacement for existing PBX and trunking technology within the UMass communications network, supporting SIP-based residential devices in residence halls. Full deployment has begun and will continue to scale in the months to come.

"The evolution of IP voice communications has created both the need and the opportunity for an efficient and highly flexible campus network," said Daniel Blanchard, associate chief information officer for the University of Massachusetts. "Our initial trial of SAFARI C(Cubed) last year demonstrated that we could simply and cost-effectively deploy VoIP -- and ultimately advanced voice services -- in our residence halls. We are especially interested in the unique utilization of the SIP protocols in the SAFARI switch" and its performance.

"Through its activities over the past several years, the University of Massachusetts has been on the leading edge of campus and enterprise telecommunications innovation," said George Kassas, founder and executive vice president, business development for Cedar Point Communications. "We look forward to working closely with the university in the years ahead on the development and deployment of applications that will shape the future of campus voice services."

Cedar Point's SAFARI C(Cubed) Multimedia Switching System, the only totally integrated carrier class VoIP switch that incorporates all of the components that make up the voice switching infrastructure, brings value to the network by providing SIP-based features and seamless evolution to an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and WiMax architectures. SAFARI C(Cubed) provides superior performance and reliability, significantly reducing capital expenditures, system integration and operations costs for cable operators offering telephony services while increasing network integrity, security and privacy.

SAFARI C(Cubed) is future-architected to fit within an IMS core network infrastructure, allowing network operators to leverage their initial equipment investment in voice as they introduce such services as video telephony and fixed-mobile applications. New applications can be integrated into SAFARI C(Cubed), or can be accessed via third-party application servers.
