Safari Books Online Advances Its Technology, Sales and Business Development Initiatives with Executive Hires
SEBASTOPOL, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- April 3, 2006 -- Safari(R) Books Online, a joint venture of O'Reilly Media, Inc. and Pearson Technology Group, today announced the addition of four key executives in engineering, sales and business development who will guide technology initiatives and work toward increasing market share for the online provider of technical and business titles by O'Reilly Media, Inc., the Pearson Technology Group and other publishers.
The new executives will focus on initiatives which include the next generation of Safari's publishing platform, and expanding sales and strategic partnerships in the United States and internationally.

The new hires are:
Dejan Nenov, Chief Technology Officer
Mr. Nenov is a seasoned manager with international experience, who offers a rare combination of expert technology and team-building skills balanced by broad sales and corporate development experience. Most recently he was vice president engineering for X-1 Technologies, a company focused on enterprise and desktop search technology. His other past positions include CIO, vice president wireless messaging, and CEO and founder of an IT professional services company. Mr. Nenov also opened and operated international sales offices and offshore development centers for U.S. based technology businesses and U.S. sales offices for European companies. Mr. Nenov holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Computing Machinery from the Sofia Technical Institute in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Dennis Kilian, Vice President, Sales
For more than 25 years, Mr. Kilian has served in sales, general management and consulting capacities in the technology sector. Prior to joining Safari Books Online, he served as vice president of sales and marketing for WiLine Networks. Additionally, he has held several senior-level positions including: various management positions with AT&T; vice president of sales for TELUS Corporation in Canada; president and CEO of Professional Sales Learning Center; vice president and general manager for a software division of Trintech, Inc; and vice president of enterprise services for NEC Solutions America. Mr. Kilian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Business Administration from St. Mary's College.
Paul Owen, Vice President, Domestic Business Development
Mr. Owen is a pioneer in the online information industry with over 30 years of business development, sales, marketing and customer care experience. He has held senior management positions with leading global companies including The Thomson Corporation, Ziff Davis Publishing, Thyssen Bornemisza, and Predicasts Inc. serving the enterprise, academic and consumer markets. In addition, Mr. Owen has held numerous consulting assignments with major content companies including those in the electronic book space such as ebrary, Knovel and Softbook Press. At Safari Books Online, Mr. Owen is responsible for developing strategic relationships with hardware and software companies, training and learning companies, online services, membership organizations, and other organizations wanting to enrich their customers' learning experience with Safari's comprehensive technical and business content. Mr. Owen holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Bowling Green State University.
Mike Violano, Vice President, International Business Development
Mr. Violano's career in publishing has spanned 25 years and has included executive positions in publishing, sales, rights, and international business development with leading online, professional and reference publishers including Prentice Hall, Macmillan USA, Pearson Education, and Hungry Minds. In the 1990s, Mr. Violano worked with hardware companies to bring professional ebook content to users of desktop, laptop and handheld computers. He has formed and managed overseas joint venture publishing companies in India, Canada, and Australia and established local IT publishing in Spanish, Japanese, and French languages. Mr. Violano also has experience in erights negotiation, international copyright protection and anti-piracy, digital rights management, and elearning product development. He holds a Master of Science degree in Instructional Technology from Fordham University and is also a published author.
