Local job search purchased by national service
(Frederick News-Post, The (Frederick, MD) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 28--MILWAUKEE -- A national online job service has purchased Marylandjobs.com.
LocalCareers.com, a Menomonee, Wisc.-based online career network, purchased the company to have a greater presence in Maryland, said Natalie Henquinet, marketing coordinator.
LocalCareers.com has sites in all 50 states with 28 referencing a state-named .com, Ms. Henquinet said.
"The www.marylandjobs.com site is a filter of local careers that have positions in Maryland," Ms. Henquinet said.
A perusal of the LocalCareers and MarylandJobs sites shows basically the same home page with the Maryland site tailored to Maryland job information. Many of the links to subsequent pages are the same on both sites.
The focus of LocalCareers.com is as an online job board, Ms. Henquinet said. For free, job-seekers can log on, see the offerings, post a resume, and employers can search the resume database for prospects.
"A job search can be nationwide, by state, by location within a state, or by job category," Ms. Henquinet said.
All MarylandJobs.com services are free for job-seekers and easy to use. There is no lengthy sign-up process and all job postings are updated daily, she said. The Maryland site allows access to jobs nationwide.
How does the company make money?
"There are ads which are similar to classifieds in the newspaper," she said. "Employers buy spots on our Web site and post jobs for a fee."
There are a lot of accounting- and sales-related positions open, she said, no openings in architecture and one in pharmaceuticals.
The company was started in 1997 by owner Brian Weis, Ms. Henquinet said.
LocalCareers.com began in Wisconsin with local job postings, then grew to other states.
"A lot of Wisconsin companies have branches in different states. That helped us in the beginning building clientele in other states," Ms. Henquinet said.
LocalCareers.com does a lot of Web marketing and posts a lot of banners (online ads elsewhere) on the Web linking to libraries and universities. "It's a basic Web marketing tool," she said.
Linking helps job-seekers view opportunities at Maryland government sites if we have that link, such as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, she said.
A lot of sites will link to LocalCareers.com even though the company does not link to those sites, Ms. Henquinet said.
"The more linking you do increases your chances of a high placement on a search engine such as Google," she said.
The company does not have sites in other countries, Ms. Henquinet said.
There also are industry-specific job sites, such as nursing, federal and state sites, and all contain local careers. Together they form a nationwide job board, she said.
