Accident Boys
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Jan. 29_(Kyodo) _ The body of a 5-year-old boy was found in a frozen pond in Tenei, Fukushima Prefecture, on Sunday following the discovery of the body of another boy the night before, police said.
The body of Keito Watanabe was found in 1.5-meter-deep waters 40 meters from the shore. Koki Ando, 6, was also drawn out from the same pond the night before and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Watanabe had frozen to death while Ando had drowned, the police said.
After the two went missing on Saturday afternoon, footmarks believed to be theirs were discovered on the pond's icy surface, and 1.5-centimeter-thick ice 5 meters away was found cracked, the police said.
The police suspect the two boys had climbed over a 1.8-meter fence around the pond as a resident nearby saw the two doing so Saturday afternoon.
Tenei town officials said both Watanabe and Ando were scheduled to enter an elementary school in April.
"They were looking forward to entering the elementary school," the head of the kindergarten the two had attended said.
In 1994, a 4-year-old boy fell into the pond and died, according to the town officials.
