Barracuda Networks Adds STARTTLS Encryption Capability for Greater Protection During Email Transmission; Email Encryption Protects Confidential Information as Messages Cross the Internet

CUPERTINO, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- June 23, 2005 -- Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, today announced all Barracuda Spam Firewall models will include support for STARTTLS (Transport Layer Security), the standard SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) feature for encryption of email communications. The STARTTLS command is used to negotiate an encrypted session using TLS, adding an increased layer of security by encrypting the email transmission channel as messages cross the Internet.

STARTTLS enables customers to encrypt email over the Internet when both the sender and recipient are using a Barracuda Spam Firewall or other STARTTLS-capable email server. This seamless encryption method is transparent to both sender and receiver and provides an easy-to-use and safe method of communicating over the Internet.

"Email encryption was previously viewed by many in the industry as being too complicated to implement," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "By utilizing a standard method for encryption, Barracuda Networks has taken a previously difficult process and simplified it so that our users can benefit from a protected channel for their email that is very easy to implement."

On the inbound, the Barracuda Spam Firewall will decrypt messages as they are received, while still performing spam and virus filtering of each message before it is delivered to the recipient's inbox. For outgoing email, the Barracuda Spam Firewall or Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound, will encrypt the channel and send email after first scanning each message for policy compliance and viruses.

"Making sure confidential information is viewed only by the intended recipient and not by a hacker during email transmission between servers is increasingly important to our customers," added Drako. "With STARTTLS we make sure that this is no longer a concern."

The STARTTLS feature is just one of several product enhancements included in a new firmware release planned for roll out in two weeks. Last week Barracuda Networks announced the integration of key outbound email filtering techniques, including rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL), keyword and attachment blocking, for simultaneous inbound and outbound email filtering into its full line of Barracuda Spam Firewall models. Also planned for release are enhancements to the Barracuda Spam Firewall's Intent Analysis and Bayesian filters, as well as extended quarantine retention policies.
